UN-HABITAT Partnership with the Gender and Water Alliance
UN-HABITAT is the Agency mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. UN-HABITAT has been actively engaged for thirty years in supporting developing countries in their efforts to develop sustainable human settlements, and ensuring that the urban poor are provided with adequate shelter and basic services such as water and sanitation. Between 1999 and 2002, UN-HABITAT, through it Water for African Cities (WAC) Programme, assisted 7 African countries to improve the management of water and sanitation. They include: Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Tanzania and Zambia. South Africa participates in the programme as a resource country.
