Water for Asian Cities Programme: Community Managed Water Supply Initiatives
It has been the perception of the public that water is to be made available free and is the responsibility of the Government, whereas the present reformative perspective advocates that water as a scarce resource must be managed locally as a socio-economic good. The present target based supply-driven approach paid little attention to the realities. Women are mostly affected in the process - travelling long distances and spend time in queuing for water collection. implementation of a participatory and demand driven approach is expected to ensure the desired level of service to the public and could afford to pay the capital and O&M costs.
